Our mission is to save lives by empowering youth to Aevidum. Aevidum is a depression and suicide education awareness initiative where informed adults empower middle school and high school students to 1) understand that depression is a treatable illness, 2) know the warning signs of depression, and 3) use their gifts and talents to spread the Aevidum message of hope, and to be advocates for other students in need… “To have their friends’ backs!”
Guided by school nurses, counselors, teachers, administrators, and community resources, students will shatter the shame surrounding this illness and save lives across the nation. The goal is to save lives by forming Aevidum organizations in middle and high schools. The aevidum message is delivered creatively through a series of student-generated materials, interactive displays, high-energy assemblies, and community events. Utilizing its Web site as a life-saving tool, the initiative also will spread the Aevidum message through a series of student-generated music videos, aevidum songs, artwork, stories, and TV shorts, etc. Aevidum, which started in 2004 after a student completed suicide, earned SADD’s National Activity of the Year award in 2009, selected from more than 10,000 schools from across the nation. The organization has been recognized by the Pennsylvania Senate, Pennsylvania House, the nation’s top mental health experts, the mental health directors of New York and Ohio, and professors at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, Florida State University, and the University of Maryland. In addition to appearing on TV, radio and in newspapers across Pa, Aevidum has appeared on Good Morning America. At the core of Aevidum is an educational philosophy that empowers students to take responsibility to make a difference. The initiative includes a toolbox that will teach students leadership, creativity, and Twenty-First Century skills necessary to succeed today. Aevidum students will be encouraged to use their gifts and talents to succeed and to recognize the gifts and talents of their peers.
Suicide, which is the third leading cause of death among young people, is a public health problem that is preventable. Aevidum is saving lives.
